L ily Ann sat at her desk in the lawyer’s office. She picked up the phone when it rang. “Heard, Heard and Crawley Law office. How may I help you?”

“This is the sheriff's department. I am looking for Lily Ann Bailey.” The officer said.

“This is Lily Ann. Is something wrong?”

“We have a David Bailey at the jail. He told us you are his guardian. We will need you to pick him up. One of my officers arrested him around noon.”

“What? How?” The words stuttered from her mouth. “Um. Are you sure it is David Bailey? He should be in school.”

“Yes ma’am. The young man is thirteen years old with red hair. He lives on Main Street. He claimed you are his guardian. We can transport him over to juvenile holding cells if you don’t want to get him.”

“No, no. That’s not necessary. The news caught me off guard. Why was he arrested?”

The sound of the officer shuffling papers could be heard through the receiver. It was a few minutes before he said anything. “He was arrested for being drunk in public, underaged drinking, and shoplifting.”

“What! Drinking and shoplifting!” Lily Ann exclaimed loudly over the phone. Mrs. Gurdy, the other secretary, almost broke her neck turning it around to listen.

“We will release him to you after the Magistrate sets bail and a court date.”

“I can't believe this.” Lily Ann’s face had become buried in her hands. Her shoulder was now holding the phone to her ear. “Please don’t send him anywhere. I am on my way.” The sound of the receiver slamming down caused Mrs. Gurdy to jump in her seat. A quick explanation and Lily Ann gathered her things before heading out.

Once in her car, she sat for a few minutes while the engine hummed. What needed to happen next was long overdue. “Fuck!” escaped from her lips while her hands turned the steering wheel maneuvering from the parking space.
